Xan Tham
Maccharisutta

(Vị Thiên):
“Ở đời kẻ xan tham,
Keo kiết hay khước từ,
Tạo nên những chướng ngại,
Ngăn kẻ khác bố thí,
“Yedha maccharino loke,
kadariyā paribhāsakā;
Aññesaṁ dadamānānaṁ,
antarāyakarā narā.
“Those folk in the world who are stingy,
miserly and abusive,
setting up obstacles
for others who give.

Ðời này và đời sau,
Quả báo họ là gì?
Chúng con đến tại đây,
Chính muốn hỏi Thế Tôn,
Chúng con muốn được biết,
Thế Tôn đáp thế nào?”
Kīdiso tesaṁ vipāko,
samparāyo ca kīdiso;
Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
What kind of result do they reap?
What kind of future life?
We’ve come to ask the Buddha;
how are we to understand this?”

(Thế Tôn):
“Ở đời kẻ xan tham,
Keo kiết hay khước từ,
Tạo nên những chướng ngại,
Ngăn kẻ khác bố thí,
“Yedha maccharino loke,
kadariyā paribhāsakā;
Aññesaṁ dadamānānaṁ,
antarāyakarā narā.
“Those folk in the world who are stingy,
miserly and abusive,
setting up obstacles
for others who give:

Bị tái sanh địa ngục,
Bàng sanh, Dạ-ma giới.
Nếu được sanh làm người,
Sanh gia đình nghèo khó,
Nirayaṁ tiracchānayoniṁ,
yamalokaṁ upapajjare;
Sace enti manussattaṁ,
dalidde jāyare kule.
they’re reborn in hell,
the animal realm, or Yama’s world.
If they return to the human state,
they’re born in a poor family,

Y, thực, dục, hỷ lạc,
Họ được rất khó khăn.
Ðiều kẻ ngu ước vọng,
Họ không thâu hoạch được,
Quả hiện tại là vậy,
Ðời sau sanh ác thú.”
Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,
yattha kicchena labbhati;
Parato āsīsare bālā, 
tampi tesaṁ na labbhati;
Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,
samparāye ca duggatī”ti.
where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
are hard to find.
They don’t even get
what they expect from others.
This is the result in the present life,
and in the next, a bad destination.”

(Vị Thiên):
“Nhờ những điều Ngài nói,
Chúng con được hiểu vậy,
Tôn giả Gotama,
Con xin hỏi câu khác.
Ở đây được thân người,
Từ tốn không xan tham,
“Itihetaṁ vijānāma,
aññaṁ pucchāma gotama;
Yedha laddhā manussattaṁ,
vadaññū vītamaccharā.
“We get what you’re saying,
and ask another question, Gotama.
What about those who’ve gained the human state,
who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,

Tin Phật và Chánh pháp,
Cùng tôn trọng chúng Tăng,
Ðời này và đời sau,
Quả báo họ là gì?
Chúng con đến tại đây,
Chính muốn hỏi Thế Tôn,
Chúng con muốn được biết,
Thế Tôn đáp thế nào?”
Buddhe pasannā dhamme ca,
saṅghe ca tibbagāravā;
Kīdiso tesaṁ vipāko,
samparāyo ca kīdiso;
Bhagavantaṁ puṭṭhumāgamma,
kathaṁ jānemu taṁ mayan”ti.
confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
with keen respect for the Saṅgha?
What kind of result do they reap?
What kind of future life?
We’ve come to ask the Buddha;
how are we to understand this?”

(Thế Tôn):
“Ở đây được thân người,
Từ tốn không xan tham,
Tin Phật và Chánh pháp,
Cùng tôn trọng chúng Tăng,
Họ chói sáng chư Thiên,
Tại đấy họ tái sanh.
“Yedha laddhā manussattaṁ,
vadaññū vītamaccharā;
Buddhe pasannā dhamme ca,
saṅghe ca tibbagāravā;
Ete saggā pakāsanti, 
yattha te upapajjare.
“Those who’ve gained the human state
who are bountiful and rid of stinginess,
confident in the Buddha and the teaching,
with keen respect for the Saṅgha:
they illuminate the heavens
wherever they’re reborn.

Nếu họ sanh làm người,
Họ sanh nhà phú gia,
Y, thực, dục, hỷ lạc,
Họ được không khó khăn,
Sace enti manussattaṁ,
aḍḍhe ājāyare kule;
Coḷaṁ piṇḍo ratī khiḍḍā,
yatthākicchena labbhati.
If they return to the human state,
they’re reborn in a rich family,
where clothes, food, pleasure, and play
are easy to find.

Như các Tự tại thiên,
Hân hoan được thọ hưởng,
Giữa vật dụng tài sản,
Ðược người khác quy tụ,
Quả hiện tại là vậy,
Ðời sau sanh Thiên giới.”
Parasambhatesu bhogesu,
vasavattīva modare;
Diṭṭhe dhammesa vipāko,
samparāye ca suggatī”ti.
They rejoice like those
who control the possessions of others.
This is the result in the present life,
and in the next, a good destination.”
