Chaphassāyatanasutta

Một thời Thế Tôn trú ở Vesālī (Tỳ-xá-ly), Ðại Lâm, chỗ Trùng Các giảng đường.
Ekaṁ samayaṁ bhagavā vesāliyaṁ viharati mahāvane kūṭāgārasālāyaṁ.
At one time the Buddha was staying near Vesālī, at the Great Wood, in the hall with the peaked roof.

Lúc bấy giờ, Thế Tôn đang thuyết pháp cho các Tỷ-kheo về sáu xúc xứ, khích lệ, làm cho phấn khởi, làm cho hoan hỷ. Và các vị Tỷ-kheo ấy hết sức chú tâm, hết sức chú ý, tập trung mọi tư tưởng, lóng tai nghe pháp.
Tena kho pana samayena bhagavā channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sampahaṁseti. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti.
Now at that time the Buddha was educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. And those mendicants were paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening.

Rồi Ác ma suy nghĩ: “Sa-môn Gotama này đang thuyết pháp cho các Tỷ—kheo về sáu xúc xứ, khích lệ, làm cho phấn khởi, làm cho hoan hỷ. Và các Tỷ-kheo ấy hết sức chú tâm, hết sức chú ý, tập trung mọi tâm tư, lắng tai nghe pháp. Vậy ta hãy đi đến Sa-môn Gotama và làm mờ mắt các Tỷ-kheo ấy”.
Atha kho mārassa pāpimato etadahosi: “ayaṁ kho samaṇo gotamo channaṁ phassāyatanānaṁ upādāya bhikkhūnaṁ dhammiyā kathāya sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti sappahaṁseti. Te ca bhikkhū aṭṭhiṁ katvā manasi katvā sabbacetasā samannāharitvā ohitasotā dhammaṁ suṇanti. Yannūnāhaṁ yena samaṇo gotamo tenupasaṅkameyyaṁ vicakkhukammāyā”ti.
Then Māra thought, “This ascetic Gotama is educating, encouraging, firing up, and inspiring the mendicants with a Dhamma talk on the topic of the six fields of contact. And those mendicants are paying attention, applying the mind, concentrating wholeheartedly, and actively listening. Why don’t I go and pull the wool over their eyes?”

Rồi Ác ma đi đến Thế Tôn; sau khi đến, Ác ma hét lên một tiếng to lớn, khủng khiếp, dễ sợ, như đất bị nứt vỡ.
Atha kho māro pāpimā yena bhagavā tenupasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā bhagavato avidūre mahantaṁ bhayabheravaṁ saddamakāsi, apissudaṁ pathavī maññe undrīyati.
Then Māra the Wicked went up to the Buddha and made a terrifyingly loud noise close by him.

Rồi một Tỷ-kheo nói với một Tỷ-kheo khác:
Atha kho aññataro bhikkhu aññataraṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
It seemed as if the earth were shattering, so that one of the mendicants said to another,

—Này Tỷ-kheo, Tỷ-kheo, hình như quả đất này bị nứt vỡ.
“bhikkhu bhikkhu, esā pathavī maññe undrīyatī”ti.
“Mendicant, mendicant, it seems like the earth is shattering!”

Khi nghe nói vậy, Thế Tôn nói với Tỷ-kheo ấy:
Evaṁ vutte, bhagavā taṁ bhikkhuṁ etadavoca:
When this was said, the Buddha said to that mendicant,

—Này Tỷ-kheo, không phải đất nứt vỡ. Ðó là Ác ma đi đến để làm mờ mắt các Ông.
“nesā, bhikkhu, pathavī undrīyati. Māro eso pāpimā tumhākaṁ vicakkhukammāya āgato”ti.
“Mendicant, that’s not the earth shattering. That’s Māra the Wicked come to pull the wool over your eyes!”

Rồi Thế Tôn biết được: “Ðây là Ác ma”, liền nói bài kệ cho Ác ma:
Atha kho bhagavā “māro ayaṁ pāpimā” iti viditvā māraṁ pāpimantaṁ gāthāya ajjhabhāsi:
Then the Buddha, knowing that this was Māra the Wicked, addressed him in verse:

“Sắc, thanh, vị và hương,
Xúc, pháp và hết thảy,¹Người soạn thay đổi so với bản dịch của Ngài Minh Châu, dựa trên bản tiếng Pāli.
Là thế vật rùng rợn,
Làm mê loạn ở đời.
“Rūpā saddā rasā gandhā,
phassā dhammā ca kevalā;
Etaṁ lokāmisaṁ ghoraṁ,
ettha loko vimucchito.
“Sights, sounds, tastes, smells,
touches, and thoughts, the lot of them—
this is the dreadful bait
that the world’s infatuated by.

Ðệ tử bậc Chánh Giác,
Chánh niệm, vượt khỏi chúng,
Vượt thế lực Ác ma,
Như mặt trời sáng chói.”
Etañca samatikkamma,
sato buddhassa sāvako;
Māradheyyaṁ atikkamma,
ādiccova virocatī”ti.
But a mindful disciple of the Buddha
has transcended all that.
Having slipped free of Māra’s sway,
they shine like the sun.”

Rồi Ác ma biết được: “Thế Tôn đã biết ta … ”, liền biến mất tại chỗ ấy.
Atha kho māro pāpimā …pe… tatthevantaradhāyīti.
Then Māra … vanished right there.
